Presenter: Canberra Theatre Centre presents A Racing Pulse Production Produced by Performing Lines
Description: A gripping true tale...dangerous escapes...enduring friendships...and a story that must be told. Through the Wire is drama you simply cannot miss! In December 2004 Ros Horin was awarded the prestigious Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award for Through the Wire following a premiere season at the Sydney Opera House in October. Since then the accolades have continued to roll in for this outstanding new play about three ordinary Australians, four refugees and the extraordinary life-changing relationships that developed between them. ‘Through the Wire is electrifying theatre… For the play is, at its centre, a love story. It reminds us how empathy and an open heart is the only sure way we have to change the world.’ Geraldine Brooks, Author Detained for seeking refuge, then imprisoned by the processes, four refugees share their life stories, their escape from their homeland, their years in Australian detention centres and their friendships with Aussies who care to make a difference. ‘At my preview, countless, both young and old, cried and stood up to applaud….An important and powerful piece of theatre.’ Dylan Behan, The Brag ‘This is political theatre, but not a polemic. It is even more a love story or stories. Politically powerful and personally emotional.’ Raymond Bonner, New York Times 'This is theatre that really matters: an awakening of compassion, and an urgent call to action.’ John Bell, Bell Shakespeare Company The power of Through The Wire is its simplicity in allowing people to tell their own stories, most often with the characters speaking directly to the audience. Written, directed and produced by Ros Horin, Set design by Seljuk Feruu, Lighting design by Stephen Hawker, Sound design by Max Lyandvert, Costume design by Genevieve Dugard.
