VANISHING POINT
¡®¡illusion is not there for the sake of illusion, but to crumble the rational, eventually finding its way to the spectator¡¯s subconscious.¡¯ Philippe Genty
In 1996 Compagnie Phillipe Genty dazzled and bewitched Canberra audiences with Stowaways. In 2000 they returned with Dedale, a journey through the labyrinth of the spirit. Genty returns in 2004 with his latest work Vanishing Point, enchanting all with the art of illusion, and his command of the magic of theatre.
White lines on a black backdrop come together, down to a point in the centre, creating a perspective¡ illuminating the Vanishing Point. Genty creates a unique universe filled with wild and surprising characters, spectacular and entertaining imagery. Characters take on a comedic persona reminding the audience about the importance of humour in life. Vanishing Point is great fun and completely accessible, it¡¯s quite simply magnificent!
Genty¡¯s work with his partner and collaborator, Mary Underwood, is ingenious. Mixing live performers with puppets and mechanical figures in such a way that it is sometimes almost impossible to tell the difference between the people and the puppets. An illusionist extraordinaire, Genty distorts scale, using floating figures, special effects, and dream-like imagery to create a fantasy world where the impossible invariably becomes reality.
Widely respected and internationally renown Compagnie Philippe Genty continues to tour extensively, bringing their dreams and visions to the stages of the world, Vanishing Point premieres in Canberra, as the destination in the Australian Tour.
¡®Vanishing Point will fascinate children, amuse adolescents, and inspire passion in adults. There is an inherent and infinite reservoir of reflection.¡¯
